What is Digital Poetry?

Digital Poetry also known as e-poetry, is more than what people think it is. It is more than using a computer to write poetry. It is a creative way to form literary expression that combines traditional poetic aspects with digital technology. It used a wide variety of creative works, like interactive poems, animated poems, and multimedia poems. Unlike traditional poetry, which is just on printed pages, digital poetry uses a multitude of tools on computers and the internet to improve the students' experience. "The experience is beyond the static surface." (Antipoets, 2011)  Through multimedia elements such as sound, animation, and interactivity, digital poetry allows its' audiences to engage with the text in interactive ways. It offers poets a unique way to explore new ways to express themselves and challenges the limits of what poetry can be.

How do you implement it in the Classroom?

Because this is such an interactive and creative way for students to complete assignments, teachers may want to implement them in their classrooms. And it is super simple! "Perhaps the simplest way to approach the concept of digital poetry is to take a traditional rubric for a poem and add a column for modalities." (Heick, 2012) Digital Poetry is not much different than regular poetry.  All students need is the internet and a computer! After they get these things, you let their imagination run wild! Students can read and work on different types of e-poetry by implementing different resources into their poetry.

Visual Poetry (languageisavirus.com)

This website allows students to create their own Digital Poetry. They are able to customize their colors, font size, and words to create a piece that represents their piece of work.

Here is an example that I created to go alongside my ecosystem VFT. I created this using the website Visual Poetry (languageisavirus.com)

Here is a link to another example that I created to go alongside my ecosystem VFT. I created this using the websites iMovie and Quozio
